This blog is the last in our 10-part series about how FirstNet will help public safety save lives and secure communities. FirstNet is ensuring the development of the first nationwide public safety broadband network to provide first responders the advanced technologies they need to save lives and keep their communities safe.
FirstNet is working to establish a public-private partnership to deploy the first nationwide, high-speed wireless broadband network for public safety. This mission grew out of the public safety community’s commitment to and advocacy for a dedicated network to address the communications challenges they faced on 9/11, during Hurricane Katrina, and with other incidents and events in their communities.
That is why FirstNet is taking a “for public safety, by public safety” approach to planning and deploying the network. Through FirstNet’s consultation and outreach program, we have worked hand-in-hand with the public safety community to understand the capacity, coverage, service, and other public safety grade features they need to communicate and use 21st century tools on the job.
With this input, FirstNet is developing a high-speed backbone for public safety to tap into new innovations and enhance their communications and information sharing. The FirstNet network will be the pipeline that enables America’s law enforcement officers, firefighters and paramedics to send data, images, video, and location information in real-time, all the time. This will dramatically increase their situational awareness and help them perform their live-saving mission safely, efficiently, and faster.
