This blog is the latest in a series about 10 ways FirstNet will help public safety save lives and secure communities. FirstNet is ensuring the development of the first nationwide public safety broadband network to provide first responders the advanced technologies they need to save lives and keep their communities safe.
FirstNet’s mission is to ensure the delivery of a single nationwide interoperable network for public safety agencies across the country. Once built, the network will modernize the communications used by law enforcement, fire, and emergency medicine personnel, providing them with access to new technologies and increased capacity for their mobile communications and data needs.
Deploying on a nationwide scale has added benefits for the public safety end user. By leveraging economies of scale, FirstNet will look to drive down the costs of deploying and operating the network with its industry partner. This will potentially yield more resources to reinvest in the network and lower costs to the end-users.
Nationwide deployment and operation marks a paradigm shift in building public safety networks. Currently, there are more than 10,000 separate, incompatible and often proprietary radio networks across the country. This approach increases costs to deploy and operate, as each individual network operator must individually buy equipment and services in limited amounts.
With the potential for millions of users on a single LTE network, FirstNet hopes to foster creation of a new ecosystem where entities compete to deliver applications and other services through the Nationwide Pubic Safety Broadband Network. By allowing public safety end-users to take advantage of an increasingly competitive marketplace, the nationwide scale brought by FirstNet will maximize the value of every public safety dollar spent.
With FirstNet, first responders will be equipped with a complete system of advanced communications tools to help them save lives and secure communities.
