The Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC) met on Monday, June 6, 2016 in San Diego, California, with the morning session open to the public and available via webcast. After PSAC Chair Harlin McEwen called the meeting to order, FirstNet Board Chair Sue Swenson, FirstNet Board Vice Chair Jeff Johnson, and FirstNet CEO Mike Poth each provided opening remarks focused on the important contributions being made by the PSAC, on behalf of public safety, in the planning and preparation for the nationwide public safety broadband network.
During the public session, Board Members and FirstNet leadership provided updates on the FirstNet Strategic Roadmap, identifying completed and upcoming project milestones. Additionally, as part of the PSAC’s role to provide expert input and advice from the public safety community to FirstNet, PSAC members and Task Team Chairs provided updates on the progress of the PSAC Identity, Credential, and Access Management (ICAM) and Local Control Task Teams as they prepare to make their final task team recommendations to FirstNet this summer.
The PSAC Working Group Chairs spoke during the public session about the activities of the PSAC Early Builders and Tribal Working Groups, providing updates related to the Groups’ efforts to share information and lessons learned associated with the early builder projects and tribal outreach efforts, respectively. Chief McEwen also announced the upcoming formation of the Federal Working Group, which will provide an opportunity to further engage the federal public safety community on key topics of importance to the PSAC and FirstNet.
The afternoon closed sessions featured updates from the FirstNet Office of the Chief Technology Officer and Public Safety Communications Research (PSCR) program, as well as discussion of state/territory and federal consultation efforts, the State Plan development process, and potential future PSAC taskings.
The meeting was held in conjunction with the PSCR Conference, with a majority of the PSAC members staying to participate in the conference. We’d like to thank Chief McEwen, the Task Team and Working Group Chairs, and the PSAC members for their active participation in such a successful meeting.
