On June 5, 2017, FirstNet Board member and former Vermont Governor James Douglas participated in a Homeland Security podcast series entitled, “Intelligence. Unclassified” in Trenton, New Jersey.  The series is jointly hosted by the National Governors Association’s (NGA) Governor’s Homeland Security Advisors Council (GHSAC) and the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness (NJOHSP).

In this podcast, Eric Tysarczyk, Director of Policy and Planning and Preparedness (NJOHSP), and New Jersey Single Point of Contact (SPOC), asks Governor Douglas about a host of important topics and pressing issues, including FirstNet’s partnership with AT&T to build the nationwide public safety network and the upcoming delivery of state plans.  Governor Douglas also talks about important considerations for the Governor’s decision on the State Plan and how the FirstNet Network will enhance public safety communications, benefit first responders, and keep communities safe.

“I would urge all of those in the governmental and public safety community to keep their eye on the prize.” Douglas says in the podcast. “In the end, this is about public safety. It’s about ensuring that a network is available to those who protect us day in and day out -- in whose care we entrust ourselves, our families, our neighbors and our property.”

While at NJOHSP’s headquarters, Tysarczyk also showcased JerseyNet, one of the five “Early Builder” (EB) public safety Long Term Evolution (LTE) network projects. The network has been used for several large planned events, most notably the visit of Pope Francis to the New York and Philadelphia areas in 2015. FirstNet gained valuable key lessons learned to help inform the planning and deployment of the nationwide network.

FirstNet wishes to thank Jared Maples, Acting Director of the NJOHSP and his staff for hosting Governor Douglas on the show and for the demonstration of JerseyNet. To see the full version of the podcast, please visit NJOHSP's website, and check out their Resiliency Bulletin.
