Maryland College Partners with Local, State Public Safety on First Responder Mobile Applications

Bowie State University (BSU) in Bowie, MD, started out primarily as a teacher training college 149 years ago. Over the years, the university increased its focus on science and technology and is now considered a leader among higher education institutions in multi-disciplined, project-based learning that incorporates the arts and humanities in solving technical challenges. Recently, the university has been working to leverage state-of-the-art technology to help solve “real-world” problems in the areas of homeland security. This includes the development of mobile applications to benefit public safety and first responders.

The 10th annual Command, Control & Communications Vehicle Rally was held this past Friday at the Fairfax County Police Department's driver training facility in Chantilly, VA. Members of the FirstNet team attended the event along with hundreds of county, city, state and federal public safety professionals from the around the National Capital Region.

The 2014 National Emergency Number Association’s (NENA) annual conference and expo provided an excellent opportunity to increase our outreach to a key stakeholder community for FirstNet – the nation’s public safety telecommunicators. During my time in Nashville this week, I talked to several representatives from state and local governments about synergies between the deployment of Next Generation 911 (NG9-1-1) and the nationwide public safety broadband network (NPSBN).
