The Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC) met on Monday, June 6, 2016 in San Diego, California, with the morning session open to the public and available via webcast.  After PSAC Chair Harlin McEwen called the meeting to order, FirstNet Board Chair Sue Swenson, FirstNet Board Vice Chair Jeff Johnson, and FirstNet CEO Mike Poth each provided opening remarks focused on the important contributions being made by the PSAC, on behalf of public safety, in the planning and preparation for the nationwide public safety broadband network.

A new video game developed by the OhioFirst.Net program seeks to show what can be possible when you change the way a user interacts with the data that firefighters already have today by making that data digital and connected.

The OhioFirst.Net program has developed a unique way for people to experience the potential of the FirstNet network – a video game that allows users to virtually see the increased situational awareness the nationwide public safety broadband network will provide to first responders. The organization will debut the game next week at APCO’s Public Safety Broadband Summit in Washington, DC.

FirstNet staff recently had the opportunity to attend training offered by the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) in Anniston, Ala. I attended the CDP in my capacity as a local first responder with the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department in order to learn new emergency response skills, however many of the lessons are also applicable to FirstNet's mission. The CDP is operated by the United States Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and is the only federally chartered Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) training facility in the nation.

The FirstNet Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC) is made up of 42 representatives from public safety and local, state, territory and tribal organizations. The PSAC offers guidance, information, and public safety expertise to FirstNet staff and the Board to ensure that user needs and public safety operational capabilities are included in the nationwide public safety broadband network. Established in 2013, PSAC members volunteer our time to assist FirstNet and assure that public safety’s voice is heard in the development of the network.

Last fall, staff from FirstNet’s technical headquarters and the Public Safety Communications Research (PSCR) Lab traveled from Boulder, CO to observe the operation of a public safety LTE Band 14 demonstration network. The temporary network had been installed by FirstNet Colorado’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) and the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) in support of a CPW hunter checkpoint along a chain-up area on eastbound I-70 in the Idaho Springs, CO area.

Reviewing 2015 Progress and 2016 Priorities

In 2015, FirstNet completed initial consultations with 55 states and territories, which began in July 2014, receiving valuable feedback from first responders across the United States—from the Northern Mariana Islands to Florida—to help shape the design of the network.
