Honoring our public safety heroes

April 11, 2024

First responders protect and serve their communities every day. Whether they’re rushing into a burning building, providing life-saving medical assistance, upholding public safety, preparing for emergency situations, or answering the call of those in need, first responders are heroes.

Each spring, we honor and celebrate our nation’s public safety officials through the following events:

April 1-30: Emergency Communications Month

Emergency communications work is critical during emergency and disaster situations. During the month of April, we commend emergency communications officials and thank them for their work to ensure first responders can seamlessly communicate in any situation. The 2024 theme is “Resilient Together” and will focus on the importance of emergency communications when it comes to building resilient critical infrastructure and working together.

April 14-20: National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week

This week honors emergency telecommunicators, dispatchers, and call takers and the vital role they play in public safety. We join Senior 9-1-1/Emergency Communications Advisor Jennifer McIntyre in acknowledging the complex, challenging work of emergency telecommunicators nationwide.

April 21-27: National Volunteer Week

Volunteers enrich many aspects of public safety — from volunteer firefighters to those providing emergency care as volunteer EMTs and more. First responders often rely on volunteers to help their agencies serve their communities in other ways as well, such as those who serve as actors during police training or dedicate time to crime prevention activities in their neighborhoods. No matter the role, we thank those dedicated volunteers who give their time and energy to public safety.

May 4: International Firefighters’ Day

International Firefighters’ Day honors the immense bravery and unyielding dedication of firefighters around the globe. We join FirstNet Authority Senior Fire Services Advisor Gary McCarraher, Board Chair and Fire Chief Richard Carrizzo, and Board member and former Fire Chief Brian Crawford in paying our respects to the men and women of the fire service, including those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

May 5-11: Public Service Recognition Week

Public service is a calling that drives our mission here at the FirstNet Authority. During the first week of May, we recognize the local, state, federal, and tribal government employees who devote themselves to public service.

May 12-18: National Police Week

National Police Week pays tribute to the dedication, service, and sacrifice of our nation’s law enforcement officers. It is a poignant reminder of the challenges and dangers faced by the brave men and women who keep our communities safe. We join Law Enforcement Advisor Harry Markley and Board members Sheriff Kristin Graziano, Sheriff Peter Koutoujian, and Undersheriff Sylvia Moir in showing our gratitude for our nation’s law enforcement officials.

May 19-25: National EMS Week

National EMS Week honors the heroism of EMS officials who work tirelessly to ensure the health and safety of others. We join EMS Advisor Jonathan Olson and FirstNet Authority Board member Paul Patrick in honoring the men and women of EMS who provide lifesaving services every day.

Every day, public safety officials across the nation work tirelessly in service of their communities. This spring, join us in celebrating their efforts, acknowledging their sacrifices, and supporting their unwavering commitment to serving others.

On behalf of the First Responder Network Authority, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the members of public safety for their invaluable contributions. It is our privilege to serve them.
