As one of the fastest growing populations in the nation, Utah boasts an attractive landscape of recreational activities from world-renowned ski resorts to popular national parks. With two-thirds of the population concentrated in the north-central part of the state, there are many rural areas, and the state is home to several federally recognized tribal lands. Access to coverage in these areas is especially important for first responders in Utah.

The First Responder Network Authority team recognizes the unique communications challenges that Utah first responders face. We have been working closely with Utah public safety officials since 2014, capturing their feedback and translating it into the design of the FirstNet network. During the development of state deployment plans, our team worked hand-in-hand with Utah leaders to ensure the plan was customized to address their needs.

Following this close collaboration, Utah chose to adopt the plan and “opt in” to FirstNet. Today, we continue to meet regularly with state and local officials to discuss their public safety broadband needs. In 2019 alone, our team met with Utah public safety officials more than 30 times. Our engagements in Utah included the Utah Fire Chiefs Annual Conference, the Utah User Panel Workshop, and the Utah Communication Leaders Meeting. Engagements like these are crucial to the ongoing success of the network and the advancement of public safety communications across the state and the nation.

We’re proud to be early adopters of the FirstNet platform and to be among the first in the nation to have each of our fire, law enforcement, EMS and utilities all connected. The technology will transform how each organization communicates with each other for any day and any crisis. It’s important that we give our first responders the very best technology to help ensure quicker response times as we serve Orem’s residents.

FirstNet in Action in Utah

  • In May 2019, thousands of spectators met in Utah to celebrate the moment when the last spike of the first transcontinental railroad was driven into 1,800 miles of track linking East with West. FirstNet was on hand to support the event, providing the Utah National Guard with new ways to communicate and operate.
  • As FirstNet subscribers, first responders in Orem, Utah experience interoperable communication with other agencies in the region and across state borders without experiencing congested networks during large-scale events like Summerfest.
