When the COVID-19 pandemic left emergency communication centers in Kansas short-staffed and training became a challenge, the Kansas State 911 Board launched an Emergency Mobile Dispatch and Training Center (EMDTC) powered by FirstNet. The EMDTC saved valuable time by bringing critical training directly to emergency telecommunicators and is available to augment call center capabilities across the state.

In December 2025, the FirstNet Authority participated in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) 6G Workshop meetings in Baltimore, Maryland. The meeting highlights included the declaration that Release 19 specifications are frozen, and all the working groups are focused on Release 20, particularly the 6G study activities.

Ensuring students enjoy their college experience safely is a top priority for campus safety officials at Delaware State University (DSU). At DSU, keeping students safe and first responders connected means making the FirstNet network — the nationwide network dedicated to emergency communication — a key part of its campus safety initiative. FirstNet helps ensure that students can reach university police at all times.

Summit hosts announced the speakers as part of an agenda that includes over 70 technology demonstrations and more than 40 plenaries and breakout sessions. This year’s 5x5 will take place June 25-27, 2024, at the Fairmont Chicago Millenium Park.

This June in Chicago, Illinois, two agencies within the U.S. Department of Commerce are coming together to advance communications technology for public safety. FirstNet Authority and the National Institute of Standards and Technology Public Safety communication Research Division (NIST PSCR) will host the second annual 5x5: The Public Safety Innovation Summit, where leaders in public safety, government, industry, and academia will collaborate to build the future of public safety technology.

The First Responder Network Authority is launching the next phase of FirstNet through a series of strategic investments totaling more than $8 billion over 10 years. The FirstNet Authority and its network partner, AT&T, join to unveil the latest network investment of $6.3 billion, delivering full 5G capabilities on FirstNet, expanded mission-critical services, and enhanced coverage.
